On the morning of October 21, 1864, the vanguard of Maj. Gen. Sterling Price’s Army of Missouri encountered Maj. Gen. James G. Blunt’s Federal division defending the crossing of the Little Blue River, several miles east of Independence. Blunt deployed dismounted cavalry and artillery along the bluffs and bridge approaches, stubbornly contesting the Confederate crossing under heavy fire. Although Confederate forces under Brig. Gen. Jo Shelby eventually forced their way across the bridge and outflanked the defenders, Blunt conducted an orderly fighting withdrawal back toward Independence. The engagement delayed Price’s advance by critical hours, permitting Federal forces under Curtis to strengthen their primary fortified line along the Big Blue River.
