The Battle of Byram’s Ford spanned two days of combat at the crossing of the Big Blue River south of Kansas City. On October 22, Confederate forces under Shelby forced their way west across Byram’s Ford, breaking Curtis’s Big Blue defensive line and forcing the Federal Army of the Border back to Westport. However, on the morning of October 23, the strategic situation inverted: Pleasonton’s cavalry arrived at Byram’s Ford from the east, confronting Confederate divisions under Marmaduke entrenching the western bluffs. Federal brigades under Col. John F. Philips and Brig. Gen. Egbert B. Brown assaulted across the river under punishing fire, climbed the steep bluffs, and captured the Confederate breastworks. This breakthrough rolled up Price’s rear and allowed Pleasonton to unite with Curtis’s army, precipitating the Confederate collapse at Westport.
